K2-18b is an exoplanet which orbits a red dwarf 125 light-years away from Earth. K2-18b has a mass greater than eight solar masses and it is therefore classified as a Super Earth. The exoplanet is found inside the habitable zone of its star and it orbits it every 33 days. Because of its proximity to the red dwarf, it is quite unlikely that the planet is habitable. Using some telescopes, including Hubble, two independent research groups have discovered the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere of K2-18b. It is the first discovered exoplanet located in the habitable zone of its star and with water vapor in the atmosphere. . . Reposted from @space.photos10 - Which are your feelings watching the Moon at night?⠀ ⠀⠀ Dreaming of clear skies and late summer nights spent imaging. Here is an HDR image taken of an early phase moon when the earth shine is visible. Earthshine is probably my favorite phenomena, it’s when light from the sun bounces off the moon, then bounces off earth, then bounces back to the moon, and then bounces back and goes into your eyes! Lots of reflections go on to make the dark side brighter, and it’s always fun to share that fact with people when they’ve never learned before. In unrelated news my final exams for this semester are coming up soon, so things are going to get rough, but also my freedom is not far away. As you may have heard, we had an asteroid (2000 QW7 to be exact) coming by earth within a few million kilometers this past weekend. As usual, a bunch of articles and posts appeared which lets say didn’t really present everything accurately. So, lets see if we can analyze this objectively.⁣ ⁣ The animation in this post contains some shots of 2000 QW7 taken saturday night. Each "hop" is roughly 5 minutes apart. The asteroid was around 5 million kilometers away from earth and is roughly 370 meter in diameter. Now, if something that size were to hit us; it wouldn't be a good day on earth. However, contrary to what you may have heard/read, there was absolutely zero chance of that happening. Let me explain why:⁣ ⁣ 1) Its name (2000 QW7). The first part of an asteroid's name always refers to the year in which it was discovered. The second part is simply a random designation based on when in that year it was found. We start with AA1 on january 1st and take it from there. This one was discovered on August 26th in case you're wondering. So with that in mind; that means we've been tracking and studying this asteroid for a little over 19 years. Its orbit is very well established and we know exactly where it's going to be passing years in advance.⁣ 2) The albedo. Albedo is a scale which indicates how reflective an object is (it ranges from 0-1). The albedo of this asteroid is 1; meaning it reflects sunlight very well and hence is very bright in the night sky. The chances of such an object "sneaking up on us" undetected are almost nonexisting.⁣ 3) The direction is was coming from. 2000 QW7 was approaching us from a direction opposite to the sun; meaning the sun wasn't interfering with our view.⁣ ⁣ Now, does all of the above mean that there's zero risk of a sizeable asteroid ever hitting us? Well, no. Based on what I've explained above; it's previously undiscovered asteroids with a very low albedo coming from the direction of the sun that can catch us off guard. Luckily, these are fairly rare.

Dunes in Martian Craters 💡⠀ ⠀ When NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter flew over Schroeter Crater on the Red Planet, it captured views of some interesting smaller craters within the crater's floor. The two impact craters shown here are located inside Schroeter Crater, which is about 190 miles (300 kilometers) wide, and they contain some intricate dune structures on their own crater floors. These Martian dunes were shaped by wind, much in the same way that dunes form on Earth. — Hanneke Weitering⠀ ⠀cosmos cosmic nebulae spacephotography deepspace galaxies constellation aquarius interstellar spaceexploration hubbletelescope keppler supernova astronomical jameswebb chandraxray nightsky nightphotography astronomer space ouruniverse astronomy astrophysics nasa spacex whatsoutthere planets STEVE aurora

A Long Storm System on Saturn It was one of the largest and longest lived storms ever recorded in our Solar System. First seen in late 2010, the above cloud formation in the northern hemisphere of Saturn started larger than the Earth and soon spread completely around the planet. The storm was tracked not only from Earth but from up close by the robotic Cassini spacecraft then orbiting Saturn. Pictured here in false colored infrared in February, orange colors indicate clouds deep in the atmosphere, while light colors highlight clouds higher up. The rings of Saturn are seen nearly edge-on as the thin blue horizontal line. The warped dark bands are the shadows of the rings cast onto the cloud tops by the Sun to the upper left. A source of radio noise from lightning, the intense storm was thought to relate to seasonal changes when spring emerges in the north of Saturn. After raging for over six months, the iconic storm circled the entire planet and then tried to absorb its own tail -- which surprisingly caused it to fade away. Relative Velocity Physics Concept The relative velocity of an object A with respect to another object B is the velocity that object A would appear to have to an observer situated on object B moving along with it. Have you ever been sat in a train at a station, seen another train moving off and felt you were moving even though you were stopped at the platform? This illusion occurs because there’s no way to distinguish between motion at constant speed and being stationary – the physics work the same. To you, sitting on the stationary train (A), or to a person on the platform the moving train (B) appears to be travelling at a velocity 𝑣 away. However, to a person on the moving train the platform and the train sitting stationary at the platform both appear to be moving in the opposite direction with the same speed, or to put it another way, with the opposite velocity. Really what we are measuring in all of these cases are the velocity relative to an observer. . . . What caused this outburst of V838 Mon? For reasons unknown, star V838 Mon's outer surface suddenly greatly expanded with the result that it became the brightest star in the entire Milky Way Galaxy in January 2002. Then, just as suddenly, it faded. A stellar flash like this had never been seen before -- supernovas and novas expel matter out into space. Although the V838 Mon flash appears to expel material into space, what is seen in the above image from the Hubble Space Telescope is actually an outwardly moving light echo of the bright flash. In a light echo, light from the flash is reflected by successively more distant rings in the complex array of ambient interstellar dust that already surrounded the star. V838 Mon lies about 20,000 light years away toward the constellation of the unicorn (Monoceros), while the light echo above spans about six light years in diameter. Finally, I found the time to connect the new Celestron focus which arrived in May, and thus too late for any serious astro photo session here in Scandinavia. It will be a necessary upgrade from the Feathertouch microfocuser on my Celestron EdgeHD 8" SCT scope. It was relatively easy to do the mechanical installation, and the software likewise. But the first dry test run earlier this weekend started an uncontrolable spinning of the focus motor, focusing inward, then outward repeatedly. Also, the focus position was not reported back to the control software either. The error search was a bit mysterious, but it seems that the Celestron focuser is very picky about the USB cable, as it is now presumably functioning well only when a brand new, high quality USB-B cable is connected. Finally, it is also a clear night and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
