What I wish people could understand (or at the very least, accept) about mental illness and suicide: We didn’t choose this. And while I am learning that we can break our brains out of the hopeless infinite loop they’re in, we have to work 10x harder than you to control our thoughts and minds. Think about that (because you can easily), how often do you have to stop to check what thoughts your mind is having and ask yourself if you’re thinking of ending your life? Because I have/am supposed to do it every 10-15min(right now) or I risk losing any progress I’ve made. It’s not that we want attention (most of us hide it until it’s too late), we wish we could just get up and do what we need to, we wish we weren’t so exhausted from breathing. I. Don’t. Want. This. I don’t know why I’m carrying the burden I am. If I did, I would do whatever it took to get rid of the burden. I wish I wasn’t this way. But, just like other things in this life like cancer, chronic illness, etc., here I am doing the best I can with what I have to work with. I wish people understood how sorry I am for being a burden at times (or the Debby downer) and really trusted I don’t choose this. I haven’t posted to my blog for the past two weeks because I’ve felt lost. Lost in this chaos and I keep thinking that since the topic is so “hot” right now amongst influencers, then someone else can tell their story or a story and it’ll be better and reach more people. But in attempts to find a purpose in this, I guess if even one person needed one of the entries, then this will all be worth it...right?

Some compulsions are observable behaviors while other compulsions are not. Mental rituals are every bit as real, frustrating, debilitating, and life impacting as visible rituals. We more frequently hear about observable rituals such as washing ones hands, compulsive cleaning, ordering/arranging, checking, avoidance, etc. Someone with OCD may experience both mental and observable compulsions. . . Mental rituals include (but are not limited to) thought neutralizing/replacing a “bad” thought with a “good” one, giving yourself compulsive reassurance, counting, checking (e.g., physical sensations), distraction, repeating a phrase/saying over and over, “figuring it out”, avoidance, etc. . . Neither type of ritual is easy to live with. Compulsions, by nature, are distressing, repetitive, and act as negative reinforcement that feeds OCD. It may feel like they help because of that temporary relief they bring but that never lasts and eventually the intrusive thought and obsessive compulsive cycle starts all over again. . . Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the gold standard evidence-based treatment for OCD. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) 📣📣📣 . I had been putting it off for a while but yesterday I finally started Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and it sounds real fancy but all that CBT is, is weekly exercises to help you manage your problems and change the way you think and behave. . It’s commonly used to treat anxiety and depression and to be fair it isn’t for everyone but I wanna try everything possible to try and feel better. I like options so I can’t blame myself for giving it a go 🌿 . My initial preconceptions of it were pretty spot on that it’s all about self-help and identifying your problems and deciding for yourself how you’re going to tackle them. I enjoy the independence and the level of trust that is there. . The independence given requires effort, you get out what you put in. My only issue so far has been that part of the exercises you have to watch videos where examples of depression and anxiety are given and I’m watching them thinking “wow my depression is nothing like that, I’m not slumped on the sofa downing cans of Stella, is my depression not bad enough?” It may not have been intentional but the comparison I had drawn really got me down - got me feeling like I wasn’t deserving of help because my depression was so different from the man in the video. . On a brighter note it made it abundantly clear that depression shows itself in many different forms. I may not be in the same depressive condition as those in the example videos, but it doesn’t discredit how I feel.
