ISLAMABAD: The common man has paid a heavy price of sugar crisis in terms of price hike. During last 14 months, the consumers have paid almost Rs85 billion rupees extra due to the unprecedented hike in sugar prices out of which around Rs 76 billion alone were pocketed by the sugar mills owners, data analysis establishes. In December 2018 the ex-mill price (the price on which mills sell sugar to the buyers) was Rs 51.64 whereas the retail price in the market was Rs55.99. However, from December 2018 to February 2020, the ex-mill price has increased by almost Rs20 due to which the retail price was also increased by Rs 24 per kilogram. Pakistan’s total annual consumption of sugar is 5.2 million metric ton (5.2 billion kilogram). The sugar mills owners pocketed more than Rs 76 billion due to this unchecked price hike of sugar in Pakistan. Let's unpack our first consumer guarantee. Recall, a consumer guarentee is an obligation businesses must comply with when selling their product/s to their consumer/s. Under s 55 of ACL, a product must be fit for the purpose the business said it would be fit for. I.e. a kettle should be able to boil water - that's its purpose. . Moreover, (and generally), the product must also fit the purpose the consumer made known to the business before buying. . In the case of Ashford Shire Council v Dependable Motors, an engineer had disclosed to the seller the purpose for which he wanted to use the tractor the seller was selling. The seller assured the engineer that the tractor was fit for the purpose the engineer had disclosed. Unfortunately for the engineer, the product failed him. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased that the state is standing firmly against rationing care based on disability. In a joint letter (https://bit.ly/2VdlBaX) to the California Health and Human Service Agency, we, along with our partners in the disability advocacy community, asked the state to also explicitly address discrimination against older adults based on age.
