This week we're highlighting the work of Elinor Cahn, who passed away last week. Elinor worked with Linda Rich and Joan Netherwood on the East Baltimore Documentary Photography Project in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and this collection is a favorite of the Special Collections staff. You can view Elinor's photos online through the UMBC Digital Collections.
Today's photo was chosen by Ben Rybczynski, a recent UMBC graduate currently working in the Library Gallery. As an undergraduate intern, Ben helped to process the photographs of the EBDPP, using his knowledge from his childhood spent in East Baltimore to identify many of the places, events, and people featured. "This Polish Festival is still held to this day, along with many others around Maryland. As a child, I used to perform with my dance troupe at many of them. In the 70s, I'm sure that festivals like this would be like a block party, for everyone in the neighborhood to get together and celebrate. Nowadays, it's one of the few opportunities old neighbors have to revisit their heritage. Also, I'm pretty sure the nuns still have that prize wheel."
