Rather than sandwich can you pick “healthier” choice. - Ask yourself is your choice going to get yourself closer to your goals? - It’s not all tuppaware and meal prep just do this best you can with where you are! - 423 calories in M & S sandwich Vs 275 in smoked salmon salad. - Costa coffee latte 283 vs filter Costa coffee 3 calories (black).....Every little helps!

Think about it across your year. - The “I’m just letting my hair down” points. - Birthday weekend, across 2 weekends (= 5 days) - Random night out and hangover food next day (2 days) - Holidays from work 3-4 weeks in total ( = 28 days) - Random night out and hangover food next day (2 days) - Easter weekend ( = 4 days) - Bank holiday weekends (= 9 days) - Random night out and hangover food next day (2 days) - Parents birthdays (= 4 days) - Christmas (starts mid-November ends 1st Jan (= 44 days)) - Few hectic stressful weeks wind down weekends (= 8 days) - Random night out and hangover food next day (2 days) - Kids birthdays (4 days) - Random night out and hangover food next day (2 days) - Now this is a potential exaggeration but all are points where you could “let your hair down” have a few beers and overly calorific foods / snacks and chocolate (here’s looking at you Easter/ whole of December). - 115 days! - This is only 4 months of a year boxed off. Just make beneficial choices to your goal at these points of the year! - Go out with friends enjoy family celebrations! It’s likely the Venti Vanilla Latte 2 x day alongside the rocky road that could be scrapped not the night out with the girls etc. - Yes the Hen / stag do may hinder progress slightly but a long weekend is significantly less time than the rest of the week. You can still do all the above and bring your weight down/ achieve your goals there is no need to stop the enjoyment in life via a juice cleanse and miss your best friends birthday! - It’s a fine line to tread to get YOUR balance all anyone can ask is that you find what works best for you!

One easy way to think about sweeteners and whether they are helpful or not. - This quote from a recent book sums it all up nicely. - It is a potential helpful switch and may aid with dietary adherence. - BUT..... - A cookie is still a cookie!

Losing weight in 2019 - Over the last 41 weeks (ish) I’m sure many people have tried to lose weight. Trialling juice plus or slimming world for the twentieth time. - This is probably a recurring theme year upon year where you go from slimming group to FAD diet which in accumulation probably add up to 100’s of days across the years where your “dieting” to then not lose any weight/ gain weight. - 100’s of days that could be better utilised by taking a more moderate approach: - Change your plate composition: - - eat plenty of vegetables (half a plate with mid day and evening meal) - Lean protein source 1/4 plate - Decent carbohydrate 1/4 plate - Snacking habits also difficult but one hard and fast rule is to make the more beneficial choices as easy as possible to do and the less beneficial choices difficult to do. E.G have fruit/ veg in plain sight at work and chocolate etc. Out of the way. - Have the make up of your plate sounding similar to the above and the environment positively changed and you won’t go too far wrong. - Use the last few months of the year to get good habits in place before the “F it it’s Christmas” kicks in! Get ahead of the new year new me BS and start to get the good habits in place now!

Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results! - On a slightly different path than the above but similarly making very little change and expecting massive results is also a little crazy! People aim to make positive lifestyle changes by changing something that’s so small it’s untrue. - It’s a goal as it can feel like it’s the right thing to say but is it going to get you to where you want to be? - If you don’t drink much alcohol reducing alcohol down probably isn’t going to cause any change. - Not eating much fast food, don’t cut it out if you only have it once a month?! - In short have awareness around the habits within each day that aren’t getting you towards where you want to be? - These are where the changes are needed! - Knowing where your going to get the biggest benefit from takes some thinking and a lot of awareness! - Reflect on your day start to realise patterns and then make adjustment. - There are daily habits that are not helping you towards your goal which need adjustment rather than stuff you do once every few weeks! - Go away have a little think, there is something hiding in plain sight!

No chance I can’t do that many my smartwatch says I only hit 4,500! That’s even on a good day....... - 10,000 steps isn’t the be all and end all. - For some it can be too much for others may even be too little. - You need to know how many your doing now, it may well be 1,000. No harm done at all at least you know. - From this point now increase it be 10% each day every week. - 1,100 steps daily week one 1,200 steps daily week two 1,300 steps daily week three - Continue this until you complete a number of steps that compliments your lifestyle and goals. - This may well stop at 5,000. Perfect you’ve increased your step count 5 fold and it’s manageable to continue at this level. - All you need to do is slightly better than you have been doing before, then stop when your at a point your happy. Not just somebody else’s figure they believe to be beneficial. - Work out your daily steps increase gradually!

People hopefully will be aware of the eat less move more concept for weight loss. It’s over simplified but not incorrect. Input vs output of calories. - Biggest Issue is that most people cut back too far and too much on the calories and this isn’t going to be sustainable. - Alongside the fact it isn’t sustainable you will get all the awful side effects as well. In a nut shell just feeling horrible, tired and hangry. - The weight loss may potentially be hindered also. - Don’t get me wrong the deficit created will cause weight loss. - But... - The massive reduction and restriction in food may well create less of a deficit than higher calories might. Bare with me on this. The huge reduction in calories may well result in less output due to feeling tired. Tired = less general movement and exercise intensity. - This means in theory you could eat more calories which may allow you to feel less tired and activity levels may well increase. This increase in the output of calories potentially causes a greater deficit and therefore greater weight loss. - The lowest calorie option won’t be the best avenue. It’s not sustainable you feel awful and it could negatively impact output of calories (move less). You could be better suited to eat more calories feel better and increase activity and lose more weight!

Five-a-day - I mean it’s not complicated you’ve heard it many a time before. - The question is are you doing it? - The quantity will arguably be increased in the future but are you completing this simple nutritional message on a daily basis. - The breakdown is 2 fruit portions, 3 vegetable portions. DONE. - Nothing complex don’t worry about the sugar or whether the salad is coated in plastic etc. Just do this on a daily basis. - Simple right? - Perfect. - Now just go away and do it.

“I’m fine until the evening then I find myself snacking on everything and anything. Crisps and chocolate, y’know all the tasty stuff”. - Far too frequent of a quote, mentioned probably on a daily basis. - It still amazes me that people feel the need to make change as difficult as possible (its hard enough without making it harder). - Living in 2019 is difficult enough we now have multiple fast food restaurants on a single streets “Free delivery if you spend a tenner”. Uber eats (literally drop it off at your door for chains that don’t deliver). - So why would you have the foods you really enjoy within arms reach whilst you sit and watch Game of thrones ie Large box of chocolates or share bag of crisps. - Anybody in their right mind would enjoy chocolate. It’s literally made to make it difficult to stop. Resulting in an over consumption of the food = potential increase in weight. - Try making the less helpful habits difficult to do and the more helpful habits easier to do. Rather than having crisps and chocolate available could you switch to a healthier snack? - You wouldn’t necessarily need to change the food just portion out the share bag into smaller pots = more helpful habit! - It never needs to be ‘perfect’ (what is this anyway?) it just needs to be slightly better than it is!

• HELP • . All my helpers - raise Yo’ hands! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 . That’s me too. It’s why I became a nurse. . I get to use the skills and knowledge I’ve learned to help people in some of the scariest of situations. I truly do love my career. . But I also get frustrated. I see so many preventable diseases and pain and medications...things that could easily be helped with things like healthy eating and regular exercise. . But how often are those the options given or taken when it just seems so much easier to throw a pill at something and say it’s under control? . Part of the reason I started coaching was so that I could HELP people do their best to make lifestyle changes to help prevent things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. . It gives me a more creative way to care for people than starting IVs, taking vital signs and giving meds. . I get to watch them go through amazing transformations - both mind and body. . I get to be more myself and curse and have dance parties whenever I want (although don’t be surprised if you see me busting a move in the ER hallway😂) . I don’t think I could ever get done my day job - But I’m also going to keep being the best HELP COACH I can be - fitting it into the cracks of time in my day so that we can keep having fun and getting fit TOGETHER 🙌🏼 .nursesofinsta ernurselife helpcoach . . .

There is a 1000 different ways to lose weight and it’s never the same answer for everyone!! - This is one way and surprisingly / unsurprisingly an effective one at that! - Calorie counting. - Now this isn’t a be all and end all and not necessary for everyone but does work. - Even if only for the short term until you find your happy medium where you can manage your weight a bit more intuitively. - Why calorie counting? - I may have pinched this analogy but it makes so much sense! - If you were spending too much money and your bank was forever minus, how would you solve this? - You would keep a closer eye on your bank balance and spending to make sure you don’t spend too much. Simple right? - This is the same with calorie counting, if your weight is increasing it means your eating too many calories than what your expending and you need to balance the books! - Calorie counting will then allow you to do this. Only an idiot would continue to keep spending and spending money without checking their bank account. It’s only going to come back to haunt you in the long term. - How about keeping an eye on your calories like you would your bank balance it’s the sensible thing to do! This will definitely get you closer to your goals! - Anybody enjoy calorie counting?

Hopefully everything is going well with the new year new me resolution. I genuinely do! - Whatever the goal may well be I hope you’ve stayed on track with the plan and are feeling healthier. - Now for the people who are restarting their slimming club for the 10th year in a row without getting the result they wanted. A singular simple question...why? - Paying for something that ultimately isn’t providing the end result is like paying for a gym that looks like the building above. You are not even getting close to what you asked for or want. So why? - Being a pound up and pound down or even having huge success but ultimately regaining all the lost weight long term means it’s not giving you what you pay for which is sustained weight loss and ultimately improved health. So I ask again why? - It’s pointless and all you are doing is wasting valuable pennies. You need to start to establish a strong foundation of good habits. - Here’s a few pointers; - Get good quality and quantity of sleep 😴! - Minimal processed foods! E.g Fast food 🍔 - Reduce liquid calories e.g Cans of Coke 🥤 - Increasing activity levels e.g Steps 🚶🏼‍♂️ - Plenty of vegetables 🌶 🌽 🥦 🌱 - Monitor on a weekly basis and repeat or make adjustments or hire somebody who can help you!

Still completely baffles me! It all makes no sense! - Before I begin I must say if slimming world works for you then great! Keep to it! The only problem I have is with the amount of people I see who it doesn’t work for as it’s not sustainable long term and as soon as their “off” the diet weight regains (or what little weight lost is regained) and some more! Then they rejoin slimming world and the multi million pound cycle starts again! - How can foods be categorised as syn and no syn. How can any foods be “free” foods. All foods have a calorific value to them therefore aren’t free and can’t have an unlimited consumption. - The aim of the game is to create a calorie deficit (eating less calories than your using therefore causing weight loss). - People still think foods can be syn free though. Even after the recent changes to muller lights from syn free to one syn. This should highlight the fact that nothing is “free”. - Also nothing should be eaten with any sense of guilt as mentioned in the article these chips can be eaten “guilt free”. All foods are guilt free* - Find a way to move more with enjoyment and eat less calorific foods to a point where you can see beneficial changes in weight, waist circumference or whatever your goal may be! - *You shouldn’t feel guilty about any foods you’ve eaten....EVER! Unless you’ve stolen it in which case do because well y’know it’s stolen! - Like and then comment below with your thoughts!

👴🏼To keep it short and sweet, the older you get the more important it becomes! - Yes gyms and being active can sometimes although not exclusively be dominated by younger adults who are getting ready for summer. Kudos to these people but they also have age on their side. - Exercise should be inclusive for all ages and arguably increases with importance as you age. - We begin adulthood being more active then as the years roll on these activity levels can decrease due to children, sedentary jobs and eventually retirement. - Around this time natural sarcopenia occurs (muscle loss due to ageing). If you then find yourself with not enough muscle mass to move your body you will be struggling with independence. - Picture one of your elderly relatives or parents getting out of a chair and how difficult that can sometimes be, they usually compensate with their arms to help lift themselves up. - This is due to weak legs and muscle loss by factoring in some resistance training (preferably before this point in their life I may add) would help to minimise muscle loss and make day to day tasks easier. - Although very unlikely to happen an over 50’s style gym would be good to help promote a supporting environment and help elderly people stay active for longer! - Spread the word and pass onto anyone you think it will help!

Embarking on any health and fitness journey in 2019? 📆 - Want to know the BIG secret ? - Keep it to yourself don’t tell anybody.......promise? - Ok here goes.....follow these steps! - 🗝 Keep it simple. - 👨‍👩‍👧 All people are, mostly, aware of the main concepts of healthy living. - 🌱 🌽 Eat : plenty of veg, good quality meat and minimally processed foods. - 🏃🏼‍♂️ Move: slightly more than you are now and incorporate exercise in (where possible) preferably exercise you enjoy! - ⏸ Don’t get bogged down in the unnecessary BS that can be spouted. Don’t worry about macronutrients (at this point now anyway) don’t worry about the best training split to do at the gym. - Get the simple foundations in place ☑️. - 👨🏼‍⚕️ We as Personal Trainers/ nutritionists and as far as Dr’s and dieticians can’t reinvent the wheel. - ⚖️ Sadly no short term FAD diet will beat a long term lifestyle change where your getting basics right most of the time. This will get you to your goal and most likely keep you there rather than yo-yoing with your weight! - Like and then comment with the strangest diet you’ve tried!

Haven’t started your New Years resolution yet? - Just can’t quite get into the swing of things in 2019 with work only just starting again and kids back in school and we’re already 8 days in. - Don’t worry I’m the same. - Intended to start didn’t quiet happen. I’m not panicking though. - The way I see it is the 80/20 rule (Pareto principle) give it a google. It’s a great concept and can be used in many different scenarios. - Nutrition wise If you eat 80% caloric intake wholesome good foods and 20% caloric intake “bad” foods you won’t go too far wrong. It keeps you sane also and allows you to enjoy meals out with friends without feeling like your off plan and feeing guilty. - This is how I plan my nutrition. - And - How I’m planning my year. My thoughts are that there is 365 days in the year. 80% of those days = 292 days this means on those days I need things to be where I want them to be. Food intake, training/ activity and recovery. - That gives me a fair chunk of wriggle room to be off some of the days. He’s been given a heavy burden to carry by way of his health, specifically severe Chrones disease. He was diagnosed at just 15 years old and it’s been an uphill battle for him ever since. Within the last 6-7 years I have seen for myself just how brutal and unyielding this disease is! I have witnessed Chrones beating at my brothers door like the Grim Reaper,dangerously close to stealing his precious life. It shook his faith, and my family to its core. Brandon never gave up and dug his heels in deeper. Deeper than the Ocean, with so much strength, courage, and power. And a whole lot of prayer!! I remember, one day at home after he had his first major surgery and was finally able to come home after months in the hospital, his doctor and nurses told him he had to walk. So, with all his tubing and pumps attached to hospital poles(2) and his 24 hr feeding bag that was super heavy, my brother got up to walk and I was at his side to help. He looked at me and said sorry. I couldn’t believe this! Sorry?! For what I said, there’s no place in the world I would rather be. He didn’t have to be sorry, but Brandon is one man I know who has always been fiercely independent and lionhearted. I can go on and on about the endless qualities I admire in my brother. All of which are as honorable and impressive as the ones I have talked about. I write all this, to give you a small glimpse into our world, as his treatments aren’t working as they once did and with a broken heart I share that his health has declined. He’s decided to seek a different treatment that has shown very promising results, however it is expensive and his health insurance doesn’t cover it, just when you think you’ve been given an out. He has started a Gofundme page to see if he can relieve some of the burden and stress worrying about how he will pay to have quality of his life, in this treatment. Wonder how long the concept of no pain no gain will continue or using DOMs as a gauge on how hard you’ve worked / muscle size increase in the future!Repost @bradschoenfeldphd with @get_repost ・・・ Many lifters judge the quality of their workout by how sore they feel following training (i.e. delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS), often because of the perception that this is a sign of greater muscle damage, which in turn will promote greater hypertrophy. As a general rule, such an approach is misguided. As discussed in a paper I collaborated on with my colleague @bretcontreras1 Bret Contreras (available for download by searching the title), there is a poor correlation between DOMS and the time course and extent of damage. Some muscles appear to be more prone to DOMS than others, and there seems to be a genetic component that causes some to experience extensive soreness while others rarely get sore at all. It should also be noted that the theory as to whether or not muscle damage does in fact equate to greater increases in muscle mass remains speculative. Importantly, high levels of soreness should be regarded as detrimental as it is a sign that you've exceeded the capacity for muscle repair, which ultimately has a negative impact on growth. Moreover, being overly sore can impede your ability to train optimally as well as decrease motivation to train. So while experiencing a mild degree of soreness is acceptable and may be indicative of positive muscle remodeling, chasing high levels of soreness should not be the goal and, in fact, can be detrimental. Bottom line: Pain does not necessarily result in gainz.

Spending a little time observing people busying thereselves with ordinary, trivial, tasks is a quick fire way of wasting your precious time on the planet. - It also looks like these people are not even present. Meaning the task in hand isnt even being focused on. Their minds are elsewhere. This could be anywhere. I think the anywhere is nowhere. - This could be likened to watching a zombie film. I observe this from what body language says but also because I’ve been there, we all have. When im not concentrating on a focused goal/task or my brain drifts off into the nowhere and under the influcence of self doubt, fear of some kind, nostaligie and sometimes hopelessness. - Distractions contribute to this and are everywhere. - Our mindset does this to us when we’re “trying” to work on something. - TRYING to do something is actually the opposite to actually DOING!! When you TRY its more likely you will become distracted because distractions mean that you still was TRYing in the first place. This is not a good thing. - TRY means ultimately nothing gets done. - This is a concept which i’m mindful of when im doing a task. The question is am I TRYING to do the task or am I actually DOING it? - We only have so much brain capacity and modern day living leads it all the way up to near full capacity. We spend our times busy being busy without actually doing anything. - Reassess your goals and write down what you need to achieve. This means you spend less time TRYING and more time DOING. - Like and comment with your current goals or dislikes with modern day living!

How to lose weight easily! - The world is making it difficult. Why add to that difficulty? - Manipulating your world is going to help dietary adherence. Making negative choices difficult to make and positive choices easy to make is going to help hugely with lifestyle changes. - Manipulating our world would mean altering what snacks are available where you can; - A) In your draw at work. B) cupboard at home. C) Glovebox of your car. - Don’t lose sleep over the environment you can’t change. - A) McDonald’s round the corner. B) Shop over the road. C) Popcorn at the cinema. - Focus on you and what you CAN change not what you CAN’T change. - Share with anybody who’s struggling to maintain healthy lifestyle.

Habits and how the little things add up! - You won’t see big changes from one healthy meal or one training session but expand that long term and the changes are massive. - All areas of your life are lagging indicators of your daily habits. - Messy room = lagging indicator of cleanliness. - Weight gain = lagging indicator of food and exercise choices. - All we are is just a representation of what we do on a daily basis. - As a great example. - 91 inches shift at take off of the aeroplane nose is negligible and nothing that would be realised by passengers but extrapolate this across America it creates a 220+ mile difference in destinations which everyone would be aware of! - Daily small habits may not be seen immediately it may take months and years but stick with it, it’s worth while! - Go give atomic habits a read@by James Clear you won’t regret it!!

Hello 👋 don’t you remember being a kid and hearing your parent or guardian echo the words “one day when you are a/an_______ enter ANY “adultish” word there, followed by YOU CAN....______enter “anything you want” SKY is the limit if my memory serves me correctly!!!! I’m pretty sure THAT starts now, if it already hasn’t. What I’m saying is -stop looking to other people for permission about going after the things you want or want to do with your life. It’s your job, no one shows up for you to do it but you, so make sure you like it. It’s your marriage, so make sure you are showing up as your best self, and try to be humble on your worst days. It’s your schedule, own it- or rearrange it. It’s your STORY, so you ONLY you get to write it. My life was filled with all of these “one day I will, thoughts 💭” an yet... i kept failing to realize that I GET TO CHOOSE when that oneday starts for ME!!! So take it from me, the girl who always waited, stood in the wings, hesitated for too long... looked for WAYS and REASONS WHY NOT, the time is now!!! Or in 5 minutes from now, but its simplistically NOW. You get to choose what you want for your life, and it’s ok to start out small. Programme jumping can be a common thing as there is forever a million and one new ways to lose weight and gain muscle and new concepts being devised on a daily basis! We all want the quickest way to our end goal! - We are driven to find instant gratification, this is innate and has been amplified with modern day living. - Products are purchased and delivered next day, high calorie foods are consumed and taste amazing immediately. Tv programmes can be watched from start to finish within one sitting. There isn’t many areas where we have to wait around for the end point. - Except health. - You won’t become ripped off one gym session nor overweight after one unhealthy snack. That being said multiply either of the above scenarios to over 12 months and you will begin to adapt to the demands you are placing on yourself. Whether that’s increased muscle mass or increased fat mass! - This SAID (specific adaptation to imposed demands) is what allows for growth in the gym and weight loss. If you stick to a training programme long enough you will adapt to the programme, if you keep changing training and the demands alter session after session the body won’t know where to adapt! - Keep it simple don’t over complicate and then rinse and repeat. Make sure you give yourself long enough to adapt to the demands before switching it up! - Consistency beats perfection!

Recent chat with someone; “I can’t lose weight due to my genetics!” - Sadly at this point not anything we know enough about and more importantly anything we can influence. - It may well be found in years to come to be something that plays a bigger part but even then the availability to modify it isn’t going to be readily available! - Focus on what you can influence- food choices, portion sizes, food environment, activity levels etc. the list goes on! - Genetics may play its part but it’s the environment we live In which is making it difficult! - As the saying goes genetics loads the gun (potentially making you more susceptible to weight gain etc.) but environment pulls the trigger (causes the weight gain to occur). - Share to people within your circle ⭕️ to try and help them shift focus to what they can influence!
