Submissions for a class I’m taking and my critique group are waiting for me. Calling to me even. And yet, I can’t bring myself to bend over and pick them up. *sigh* Not to mention the huge stack of books waiting to be read. So much to read. So today I reached 19,300 words on my novel today. I’ve found that it’s getting easier as the habit develops. Today I wrote a chase/ battle scene, and I enjoyed every minute of it. "It's hard to believe in something you can't see. It's harder to not believe in something when that lack of belief promises to send you to hell." ~The Life of Mark Blaine III • Hell can be a very useful tool when trying to frighten people into obeying. Not all is lost. Much is gained from experiences in life. However, these experiences often caused us a lot of pain. We have to look at life from a different lens and realize that it is not a final destination we are heading towards but a return into the beginning. The afterlife is the same as before life. Illusive Words⁣ ⁣ Sometimes I get incredibly frustrated with my limitations and my inability to spell inconvenience. 😂 But you know how some people just know what to say and how to say it? Or they know how to paint the right stroke or combine the right notes to create a masterpiece? I’ve always been envious of those people. Like their talent is special and magical and therefore out of reach. But they have the same words I do. The same paint brushes. The same strings. ⁣ ⁣ I think some things come easier to some people but I bet most creative people we envy just work their asses off. They study and practice and don’t give up. And when they can’t figure out how to spell the right word, they come up with a different one. 🌑✨ . . . . . .authorsofig authorsofinstagram writersofinstagram writersofig writerlife writerproblems creativelifehappylife creativeprocess creativeinspiration writerinspiration writersinspiration yaauthorsofinstagram yaauthorlife writertips yawriter yawriters amwriting amwritingya writingcommunityofig writingcommunity

Here’s to breaking down the myth that unproductive inherently = lazy. We’ve been conditioned from a young age to associate hard work exclusively with tangible results, to believe that if we’re not constantly busying ourselves with something, we aren’t doing anything of value. Particularly for those of us in creative fields, there’s a certain expectation to always be producing something. Reach a certain number of words a day. Finish a novel in no time. And while these are helpful goals to have, and it’s important to practice our craft and get the work out there, expecting to be at the top of your game 100% of the time is unrealistic. I planned to be so much farther into writing my first draft than I am right now— but life happened. A friend suffered a tragedy that shook me for weeks. My health took an unexpected turn and left me feeling sick and unmotivated. These are things that can’t always be accounted for, and beating ourselves up over bumps in the road isn’t healthy. You are still a creator even if you are not creating. You’re still a writer even if that draft isn’t done. You’re still valid even if you’re unable to perform in the same way that others do. Cut yourself some slack. Discipline and dedication are important, but self-care and patience are necessary, too. Take care of yourself first, and your stories will still be there for you when you’re ready. x x x x x x x x xwriting writerproblems writingadvice mentalhealthawareness aspiringauthor authorsofinstagram

Everybody hates them. An agent, editor, competition, or someone else in the industry that you want to impress asks you to boil your full-length masterpiece down into two pages. Or one. Or 250 words. • You can tear your hair out, or you can knuckle down and get it done step by step. • First of all, what the synopsis is NOT. • It is not a list of every character in your book and how they all relate to one another. It does not detail every plot point and subplot in your story. It is not written in point form. It is not a "back cover copy" teaser. It does not tell me how much more there is to your book if I would only allow you another twenty pages to tell me about it, nor how frustrated you are that you can't include all the essential details because of the word-count limit. • Now what the synopsis IS. • It is a succinct detailing of the main points of your story's primary plot. It contains complete, well-constructed sentences. It names only the two or three most important characters, and the first time their names appear, they are in ALL CAPS. It sticks to the point, shows how the main character grows and changes, and reveals the ending. • Tomorrow, I'm going to break it down further. Step by step, how to construct a great synopsis and make it fit the submission guidelines you're working within. • www.dragonsfireseries.com

When writing feels difficult, or you get blocked or discouraged, remember: take a deep breath and take it sentence by sentence. Bird by bird. Every book you’ve ever read began as an idea, and those ideas became a story one sentence at a time. As we move through our busy days and chaotic schedules, it’s easy to let overwhelm take away our ability to write. But we’re all capable of one sentence a day. You can scribble it down during a meeting, punch it into your phone on your lunch break, or speak it out loud on a crowded train on your way home. (I dare you. Then laugh maniacally to really show people you’re sane.) 😂 . Have you written your sentence yet today? If not, take a moment to think about why that is. I’m sure a bunch of legitimate reasons will leap to the forefront. Let them! It’s okay. We’re busy people. Let all of the obstacles and feelings and resistance bubble up inside you. Acknowledge them, say hello, give them high-fives. Then write your sentence. 😊

Thanks to an ELLA grant, English professors Angie Carter and Deb Thornton were able to take a group of students to see "The Lifespan of a Fact" at @pioneertheatre in Salt Lake City. This play highlighted the interactions between a fact-checker, an essayist, and an editor--highlighting the tensions that arise when trying to balance art, fact, and business. The editing students who attended the play were able to share their experiences in class, commenting on the importance of matching the level of fact checking to the audience, genre, and purpose of a piece. "All in all, it was an amazing experience," Angie Carter said. --------degreestoanywhere uvu gouvu engagedlearning english play lifespanofafact author editor factchecker englishstudent editorproblems writerproblems

NaNo day 19. 😱 Is it even a NaNo playlist if it doesn’t have Marianas Trench on it?! If you’re me, then no. (Quote is from “Only the Lonely Survive” and this song is perfect for my book tbh.) 💛 🖤 💛 I tried for a 10k day for day 18 and ended up with just under 9,500 words! It was a great writing day, I’m getting into some fun stuff in this novel and I love it so freaking much. I love everything I wrote today and even though I know that will probably change when I reread it later, it feels really good because this year has been a rough one for writing. I will take any win I can get. 😂 💛 🖤 💛 Qotd: do you have a NaNo/WIP playlist?! SO this really beautiful and synchronous thing happened tonight. I have been struggling with the mean girl voice in editing my book: so, I have been up at 5:30am ripping out sections of vulnerability and what I considered imperfections. Looking at it as if I were an English Lit teacher (what are the themes? what is the purpose?) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You might think that this is the way to handle an artistic piece but it's not: ripping apart the imperfections separates it from the authentic feelings and thoughts that I had when I first wrote it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's my friend Pat who told me this advice when we were on our way to yoga tonight. I didn't think about it like that. I was really taking out the embarrassing pieces... and trying to qualify parts in my own head from the perspective of "a reader". ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SO! During Yoga, our instructor had borrowed Pat's copy of my first book (My Heart Full of Words, link in bio) and she .....of all the days.... chose to read a poem out of it to the class! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Seriously. and while I was stunned and revelling in my poem through someone else's words, I was overwhelmed with THE poem she chose. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was one that I had convinced myself to remove because it didn't have the "flow" and the rhyme was a little off. I thought no one would like it. I ended up putting it back at the last minute not for any reason other than the fact that I wanted to show the progression of style ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, she chose THAT imperfect poem to read in front of the class. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am committing as part of my artist's process to change how I view editing in order to stay vulnerable and embarrassing and emotional. Because that is who I am and that is the voice I was given. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you Diane and Pat and the Universe!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . . . manifestationbabe innerpeace writerproblems amediting spiritualgrowth growthmindset synchronicity spirituallyspeaking womanpower outerpeace innerpeace manifestationnation innerwork 30something radicalselflove empowerment femaleempow writer

[Read Caption] Conversations are clichéd. And, still the most precious. People talk & expect good ears, People listen, just for the sake of it. Millennialism demands communication, Be it the communication of silence. Not necessarily, the words be spit, Instincts of the poor heart be enough. It's not any magic of understanding, It's the nourishment of the bonding. This is all we need : a couple of smokes, a cup of coffee and a lil bit of conversation. Not the luxurious phone as a filter, between the conversation over a coffee. Conversation about everything & anything, related to existence and non-existence.
